I just installed a 480gb sandisk ssd plus in a mid 2011 imac with no external thermal sensor on the old drive.
Imac ssd temperature sensor fix.
Imac intel 27 emc 2309 and 2374 hard drive replacement.
The imac hard drive has an integrated temperature sensor the imac fans will run at full speed if you replace the hdd without the temperature sensor and or proper connector.
Obviously nothing to connect the 8 pin temp sensor to.
If you dont buy the thermal sensor a bypass that work most of the time is hdd fan control app that you will need to install after the ssd installation is complete and if the fans are raving.
I simply diconnected the cable that normally connects between the hdd temp sensor socket on the main logic board and the hdd from the hdd but leaving it plugged into the logic board.
I currently have it at 2500 rpm which is quiet enough but can i permanently set it a bit lower.
This hack fix bypasses the hdd temperature sensor in order to fool imac into thinking that hard drive is working at normal temperature.
Other world computing outlines faulty temperature sensor connections may be to blame for an imac s fans blaring after a hard drive upgrade.
Potentially fix imac fan blaring after hard drive upgrade.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
